What is the difference between Home Care and Residential Care?

Home care and residential care are both types of aged care services, but differ in where the care is provided and the level of support given.

Learn more about the differences between the two in our guide.

Aged care involves a range of support services designed for older Australians, either within their home or in an aged care facility, such as a nursing home. These services can include assistance with daily tasks like cooking or cleaning,  mobility aids such as walking frames or ramps, and specialised accommodation options. Government funding is available for eligible individuals seeking access to aged care services.

Home care and residential care are both types of aged care services, but differ in where the care is provided and the level of support given.

Home Care

  • Home care services are provided to older Australians in their own homes
  • Home care enables people to stay in a familiar environment while receiving support with daily tasks and maintaining independence
  • Home care support may include help with personal care (such as showering, toileting or dressing), chores around the house, cooking and meal preparation and medication management
  • Home care services are flexible and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual and their family

Residential Care

  • Involves living in a facility specifically designed to provide accommodation and support for older Australians who require higher levels of care
  • Residential (or nursing home) care offers 24/7 care provided by staff
  • Residential care can include help with personal care, medical care, meals, and social activities

The main difference between home care and residential care is where the support takes place and the level of support provided. Home care allows individuals to receive support in their own home, maintaining their independence, while residential care involves living in a specialised facility with around-the-clock care.

Frequently asked questions

If you or someone you care about is receiving aged care, it’s important to know your rights and to feel confident speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

The Australian Government has introduced a new Statement of Rights to clearly set out what every older person should expect when getting support. It’s part of a broader shift toward aged care that puts people first. Along with the New Aged Care Act, this will officially be in place from November 1, 2025.
