Can I manage my own Home Care Package?

Yes, and this approach puts you in the driver's seat of your care journey. The self-management option gives you more choice and control over how your care is planned, delivered, and funded.

You can make decisions that best suit your lifestyle and preferences when you self-manage your package. You can handpick the service providers and care workers you feel most comfortable with, rather than accepting those assigned to you.

This means you can choose people who have the right skills, fit well with your personality, and understand your unique needs. You may prefer a care worker who speaks your first language, shares similar cultural values, or simply has a communication style that works well for you.

Self-management gives you flexibility

You can arrange for services at times that fit around your life. You can also manage your budget directly, deciding how to allocate your funds to get the best value and prioritise the services that matter most to you.

It is, however, important to understand that self-management doesn't mean going it alone entirely. You'll still need to partner with an approved Home Care Package provider who acts as the financial administrator of your package. They'll receive the government subsidy on your behalf and ensure that funds are used appropriately and in line with the rules.

Your provider will typically handle the paperwork, process payments to your chosen care workers, and manage government reporting requirements. Many providers offer helpful tools and guidance to support you in self-managing, such as budget tracking systems or advice on finding quality care workers.

With greater control comes some added responsibility

Self-management requires a time commitment to organise services, possibly recruit care workers, and keep track of your spending. You'll need to ensure you're using your funds for eligible services that align with your care plan. Regular communication with your approved provider is essential, especially regarding complex care needs or clinical matters.

The good news is that this option for self-management will continue under the new Support at Home Program. The arrangements will be similar to the current system, maintaining your ability to have significant input into your care decisions.

Remember: Self-management isn't for everyone. Some people prefer to leave the coordination and administration to their provider so they can focus on other aspects of their lives. For those who value independence, however, flexibility and personal choice, managing your own Home Care Package can help create a care arrangement that works well for you.
