NSW Health / VIC Health
For states that mandate masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) for disability support workers, Hireup pays their workers 50 cents per hour to cover the cost of PPE. Currently, no states mandate PPE.
What is PPE?
PPE refers to anything used or worn to promote the health and safety of both support workers and those seeking support. PPE includes things like gloves, goggles, face shields, face masks, and aprons. The type of PPE used should be based on the level of risk associated with the environment that you’re working in and the potential for exposure to infection. For more details on infection management at Hireup see our guide.
As PPE is now widely available we encourage that you purchase PPE as required from your local chemist, Bunnings or online at RSEA.
We understand that for some people with disabilities, wearing a mask is not possible. Where this is the case, support workers should do all they can to maintain a safe distance of 1.5m and ensure their PPE is well-fitted and changed regularly.
Hireup is offering various free additional services for those finding it difficult to find and manage supports at this time: from helping you prepare and build your team of support workers, to managing your account and more.
Your Digital ID can be used during, or when travelling to and from a booking to verify your employment with Hireup and confirm that you are currently providing essential disability support work.
As a disability support worker, person with a disability, or carer for someone with a disability, you may be eligible for different forms of government paid pandemic leave.
It’s important to understand how to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Australia, which includes staying home from work if you feel unwell.
