What's the difference between Capacity Building and Core Supports budgets?

In this guide, we’ll explain the differences between two major categories of funding on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS): Capacity Building and Core Supports. We’ll explain what each budget is designed for and provide some examples of the types of support you can get under each.

What are Core Supports? 

Your Core Support budget is made up of supports that will help you go about your daily life while working towards your goals and objectives. 

Core Supports is generally your most flexible category of funding, and include:

  • Assistance with Daily Living 
  • Assistance with Social and Community Participation. 

Examples of Core Supports

Core Support - Assistance with Daily Living

  • Personal care.
  • Help around the house.
  • In home care.
  • Out and about in the community.
  • Social activities.

Core Support - Assistance with Social and Community Participation

  • Support with engaging in social or recreational activities. 
  • Support in becoming more involved in your community.
  • Support delivered in the workplace.

What are Capacity Building supports?

Your Capacity Building support budget is made up of supports that help you build your independence skills.

Unlike the flexible Core Supports category, your Capacity Building budget can only be used for approved supports in each of these five areas: 

  • Improved Daily Living
  • Increased Social and Community Participation
  • Improved Relationships 
  • Finding and Keeping a Job
  • Improved Learning.

Examples of Capacity Building Supports

Here are some examples of supports that fall under each of the Capacity Building budget categories. 

Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living

  • Therapy assistance (implementing allied health plans)
  • Public transport training
  • Individual skill development 
  • Education and Employment 

Capacity Building - Increased Social and Community Participation

  • Developing skills for community, social and recreational participation 
  • Public transport training and support 
  • Therapy assistance (implementing allied health plans)
  • Education and Employment

Capacity building - Improved relationships

  • Individual social skills development for participation in community and social participation 
  • Therapy assistance (implementing allied health plans)
  • Education and Employment

Capacity building - Finding and Keeping a Job

  • Specialised Supported Employment

Capacity building - Improved Learning

  • Education 
  • Assistance to Access and Maintain Employment or higher education
