The right to a good life: NDIS guiding principles

31st August 2020

At Hireup, we believe that people with disability should be treated equally and have the right to a good life, just like everybody else in society.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) believes in this too, and has 17 guiding principles that address the rights of people with disability. Their principles can be considered as actions that guide people with disability, their networks and organisations who work within the NDIS to know the rights, role and fair treatment of people with disability.

Some significant themes featured in the NDIS guiding principles include:

  • People with disability should be allowed to realise their potential for physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • People with disability may need support in achieving their goals - whether social or economic - in society.
  • People with disability have the right to make choices and have control, and engage as equal partners in decisions that will affect their lives, to the full extent of their capacity.
  • The NDIS acknowledges and respects the family and close networks of people with disability, and the importance of knowing their family member with disability will be supported throughout their life.

You can read about the principles more in-depth in the NDIS Act 2013
