Gig Worker Reforms

The Commonwealth Government is also proposing changes to the law around employment standards for gig-economy workers, including those delivering disability support.

While these changes will not impact providers like Hireup, who employ their support workers, many platforms, workers and people with disability will be affected.

Understanding the NDIS Review

Bill Shorten, the NDIS Minister, called for a comprehensive review of the NDIS back in October 2022. It was a move aimed at addressing concerns around sustainability, bureaucracy and decision-making, while ensuring the NDIS can continue to make a positive difference in people's lives.

The Final Report was delivered on 7 December 2023 and included 26 recommendations and 139 actions to make the NDIS safer and fairer.

Gig Worker Reforms: What's changing for support workers?

Alongside the NDIS Review, the government is also considering changes to the law concerning employment standards in the gig economy. These are known as the ‘employee-like’ reforms and will impact disability service platforms, particularly those not registered with the NDIS, and their support workers.

These reforms won't impact the Hireup community, as all of our support workers are already employed by us.

A Guide to Employee-like Reforms

The Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Bill 2023 will change how workers are treated on certain gig economy platforms, including those in the NDIS.

These changes are known as the ‘employee-like’ reforms.
