Does the NDIS fund STA respite care?

On 3 October 2024, the definition of NDIS support changed. Read our guide to the updated list of supports funded by the NDIS here.

The NDIS offers eligible participants an opportunity to spend some time away from home, fully funded by the scheme. Short Term Accommodation (STA) respite care provides you with a safe and relaxing environment so you can have a change in scenery and explore something new, while your carer can have a change in routine.

In this article, we’ll find out what is Short Term Accommodation (STA) respite care, what are the eligibility criteria and how to apply for funding and, lastly, how to find the right respite care facility for you.

What is STA respite care?

Short Term Accommodation, often referred to as STA, is a form of respite care which offers you and your carer a break from the daily routine. For you, it is an opportunity to explore new surroundings, meet new people and even develop new skills by joining group day trips and activities. For your carer, it is a chance to have some time for themselves.

Typically, the NDIS funds 28 days of Short Term Accommodation per year. The way you can spend your funding is flexible, for example, you can choose to have just two long 14 day stays or numerous short weekend trips.

Bear in mind that under STA a maximum stay is 14 days. If you require an arrangement that is longer than that, you can seek support through Medium Term Accommodation or Supported Independent Living.

How can I access respite care funding?

If you believe that you and your carer would benefit from a change in routine, you should raise it in your next planning meeting. During the meeting make sure to highlight how much support you require day to day and how your carer assists you with those needs.

As for all NDIS supports, you’ll need to showcase that it’s reasonable and necessary for you to receive the funding. Be sure to bring plenty of support documentation to back your case. Documents, such as letters from an Occupational Therapist, Psychologist and/or a statement from your carer will be very useful in showing to the NDIS how beneficial the respite care would be for you both.

Another way to access respite care is to use your already allocated Core budget funding. You can do this if you believe that the purpose of the break would support you in achieving your plan goals.

How do I find the right respite care facility?

Once you secure the funding, you can start searching for the right facility to spend your time away. There’s a wide range of facilities all across Australia, offering Short Term Accommodation to suit everyone's needs. Some can be small but have a homely feel while some are much larger and offer a resort-like experience.

It is a good idea to spend some time searching to understand what type of accommodation, support options and group activities different providers offer. You may also wish to ask your friends or online communities who may offer you advice based on their experience. Your support coordinator can be a great source of information too and will be able to advise you with any questions regarding funding and providers.
