The Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Bill Shorten, has launched the government’s NDIS review at a press conference in Canberra.
Introducing it, Shorten pointed out that it’s a decade since the NDIS was created. "There's nothing that I'm more proud of in my working life," he said.
“But for too many people accessing support, though, has become problematic. For too many people the Scheme has developed into a source of stress and anxiety. We need to make sure that it delivers on its promise.”
Shorten said the review would "have people with disability at its heart". He said the review would "genuinely engage, not just consult".
He says the final report will be handed down no later than October next year.
A website has been launched to support the review. NDIS ‘architect’ Bruce Bonyhady will co-Chair the review with Lisa Paul. An expert panel will provide oversight.
In posts online, the review was welcomed.
Campaign group Every Australian Counts (@EveryAustralian) tweeted “This review could and should be the exact thing we all need - a REAL chance to take a serious look at the NDIS and be heard, make changes - and finally get the NDIS to work really well.”
In a reference to Star Wars, Shorten's office called the review the start of "NDIS 2.0: A New Hope".
