Hearing Awareness Week: 'get to know the person and how to communicate with them'

Meet Dyllan. He’s an electric guitarist, Queen music lover and Digital Designer at Hireup. Dyllan spoke to us about the misconceptions faced by someone who lives with a hearing impairment, and shares his lived experience and perspective as part of Hearing Awareness Week.

Hearing Awareness Week is a global movement that raises awareness around the care and prevention of deafness and hearing loss. Celebrated annually from March 1st - 7th Hearing Awareness Week continues to thrive.

This year's World Health Organization (WHO) theme is ‘Hearing care for ALL! Screen. Rehabilitate. Communicate.’

Some of WHO’s targets this World Hearing Day 2021 are:

  • Good hearing and communication is important at all stages of life.
  • Hearing loss (and related ear diseases) can be avoided by preventative actions. such as: protection against loud sounds, good ear care and immunisation.
  • Hearing loss (and related ear diseases) can be addressed when it’s identified early and with appropriate care. 
  • It’s recommended that people at risk of hearing loss should check their hearing regularly.
  • People who are experiencing hearing loss (or related ear diseases) should make an appointment with their health care provider.
