Alex’s goal is to become the best support worker he can be. Since joining Hireup in May 2024, he's connected with nine clients, fully embracing the opportunity to learn and grow with each interaction.
“I approach all relationships with a focus on individual boundaries, choices, preferences and advocate the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces for all,” Alex emphasises.
Earlier this year, Alex learned about Hireup’s Impact Grants, which, in partnership with HESTA, offer $5,000 to support workers to help them achieve (or work towards) an important professional goal.
Alex was overwhelmed to win the scholarship, which will help him pursue a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) and a Certificate IV in Disability Support. It will also allow him to invest in a dependable computer and all the essential textbooks he needs.
Alex believes that as a support worker, it's important to continue expanding his skills and expertise to provide specialised support.
“As a support worker, I’m in a position of trust. I would be doing a disservice [to myself and my clients] if I didn’t continue to develop my skills and foster that trust,” says Alex.
“It is important to me that I have the necessary skills and experience to provide consistent, high quality care.”
Alex’s dedication and growth mindset were recognised by the Hireup Impact Grants selection panel. Jamie Crosbie, Hireup’s Director of the Worker Pillar, noted Alex's eagerness to learn was a standout quality.
“While Alex is new to support work, he feels that he has found something of a calling. He says that he wants to do so for one simple reason; to enable him to support more people,” Jamie explains.
“I'm excited to see Alex build on his already strong foundational skills to make an even bigger impact in our community.”
Alex sees achieving his goals as a lifelong journey that will enrich both his career and personal life. He feels that being in a supportive environment where he can be himself gives him the motivation to continue growing and contributing to his community.
“Finding myself in an industry and supportive environment to be accepted as I am will be a source of endless joy well into the future.”
