It started with Shane
The youngest O’Reilly, Shane, grew up alongside his brother Jordan and sister Laura.
Shane had cerebral palsy — but that didn’t change the usual sibling antics. They played pranks on each other, helped each other out and argued about things kids argue about.
One thing that was always made clear by their parents… Shane was to be included. No matter what.
This meant inclusion in the fun stuff — games of hide and seek with Laura and Jordan and the not-so-fun stuff, like chores. Even mowing the lawn.
It was this kind of innovation and determination that cemented the belief that anything is possible.
Dad and Shane went out and found this dodgy old wheelchair that we used to call the Cherry Picker. They connected a lawn mower to Shane’s knee block and off he went mowing the lawn.

Support in Australia didn’t help Shane to shine
Access to great, consistent support in 90’s and 00’s Australia wasn’t easy.
It was heartbreaking for Laura and Jordan to watch as day after day Shane said an enthusiastic ‘hello!’ to another new support worker that arrived at the door, just to be ignored.
Shane needed consistency and workers he could bond with. The kind of worker who he could share inside jokes with.
He had great relationships with some of his workers, but he had no choice or control over who arrived at the door.
In day programs, Shane was left just sitting in his chair, falling asleep to TV or forced into activities he wasn’t interested in.
When school finished, Shane faced an Australia that felt like it had no future for him.
"We could see his spirit being crushed", Jordan remembers.
Devastatingly, in 2011 at just 21 years old, Shane passed away.
Building a better way
Laura and Jordan were driven by their experiences at Shane's side to make disability support in Australia better for everyone.
The determination of the O’Reilly family to innovate and include Shane in everything helped them reimagine the traditional ways of accessing support.
So in 2015, they started Hireup.
