The Hireup Board Observership program: Steve Ralph’s experience

29th March 2021

Steve Ralph is Hireup’s first Board Observer.  He began his six month observership in January.

When I sustained a complete spinal-cord injury, three years ago, my life turned upside down.  I knew nothing of the world of disability. ‘Hireup’ was not a company I’d even heard of, let alone used.

Today I sit in on its board meetings, offering the perspective of a client managing my ‘new normal’ with the aid of support workers. In return, I’m learning how such a fantastic business operates behind the scenes and all that goes into running an organisation of Hireup’s size, ambition and purpose.

Learning about the disability sector through the lens of Hireup is motivating and a great opportunity. The Board Observership Program has been a great introduction to high level business decisions and to the disability industry, which I feel very passionate about.

The directors and leadership team have been extremely supportive of the program. Every meeting is a new opportunity to learn, share my voice and add my perspective to a very important discussion.

Hireup’s strategy and direction are guided by a range of views. The program is a great way to provide a client perspective into that conversation. It is humbling to offer that perspective and give value to the business.

Witnessing the professionalism and commitment of the board has been a personal development opportunity. Hireup also offers the chance to participate in the Australian Institute of Company Directors course. This intensive training will further cement the learning from the program.

This experience has been an opportunity to build connections with people across the business. Hireup’s ambition and culture have furthered my drive to make a difference for people living with a disability.

This could mean a variety of things for the future. Where this experience could lead is an exciting notion to ponder. The connections and skills that I am building through the program are great foundations to make a difference in the disability community.

A role as a director of an organisation is not something that I had seriously considered previously. However, it’s definitely become more tangible through participating in the Board Observership Program. This program is a great stepping-stone into the next chapter of my professional career; no matter where that may lead.

"I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I would highly recommend the program to others that might be considering applying."
