Here's a preview to the guide

Hireup acknowledges there are many different perspectives in the autism space, and we respect people’s personal preferences about how they refer to themselves and others.

How do we describe autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others, and experiences their environment. Every Autistic person is different - and this is why autism is described as a ‘spectrum’. An estimated 1 in 70 Australians are on the autism spectrum.

What support may an autistic person require?

As we mentioned, autism is a spectrum and this means that every person will require different supports throughout their lifetime. A few supports which may be suggested include:

  • Support to build capacity and independence: this may include therapeutic supports from an allied health professional, and may be complemented by a skills development program or with assistance from a support worker
  • Support to assess risk and be safe: this may include support from a positive behaviour support practitioner, other allied health professional including a speech pathologist or occupational therapist.
  • Support to learn daily activities and with communication: this may include therapeutic supports from an allied health professional such as a speech pathologist or occupational therapist, and may be complemented by support workers.
